Grandma arrested

I just read this story and I have to say I have a hard time understanding why a grandmother would do something so stupid and dangerous with a grandchild.
Grandma Arrested

What are your thoughts on this?

People can amaze you. Sometimes I feel, however, that the news accounts and the police response are possibly out of line. Not that I'm condoning what she did at all. It's just sometimes hard to know the full story and at times it sounds worse than it actually was. No doubt it could have been extremely dangerous. Or it could have been no more dangerous than other things happening in the parking lot at the same time. It was just much more visible.

I've seen what I think is worse in parking lots from parents. How often have you seen someone pull in to park and the kid gets out of the car and wanders right out into the lane of traffic with no supervision from the parent? I can't tell you how many times I've had to stop completely waiting for the parent to realize and take control of the child. One can say that 'those things happen' but in my opinion the parent is directly responsible. They have specifically taken their child into a VERY high risk situation and it is incumbent upon them to exercise maximum caution and control. EXTRA care and caution is required in such locations. They have put their child in harm's way as much or more through inaction as possibly that lady did through action.

Or how about seeing someone cutting their grass with a riding lawnmower with a two-year old in their lap? That one always amazes me.

It may of sounded like fun, but it certainly wasn't safe. Crazy I tell you.

I heard this story on NPR this morning.

Baker, I agree with you on parents letting their children wander into harm's way. It is the parent of a small child's responsibility to know where their child is and what he/she is doing.

Well, like Baker said, we probably aren't getting the whole story. they implied grandmother which conjures various images for me, not all the qualities of someone who could react quickly to changes in the environment around them.

The thing is, the more people we put on this planet, the more that will happen, and the more stories like this will trickle out of major publishers.

There are many risks in life, and to avoid them, you simply don't leave your house maybe.

Perrsonally? If I was the kid, I'd want to be on the top of the car, it's just how I'm wired. i enjoy living dangerously and potentially risking my life for a few minutes of adrenaline.

However, being the child was what, all of 3 years old? Sigh....bad granny. At least I waited until I was 7 before I started tempting fate...

She was driving slow though...
